The first part is an old jeep trail that will take you up to WP22, from there a new trail heads up to crater lakes. Hotels near Aspen Music Festival and School, Hotels near Aspen Center for Environmental Studies.
It’s definitely steep w some scree. Itd be easier hiking through goat poop the whole way up and down. It was very disturbing and sad...set the tone for our hike and I will likely not be back to this area as it was pretty traumatic.
Driving directions from Durango: Drive 45-miles north of Durango on US 550 to the Andrews Lake turn off.
Keip in mind that you'll have to climb 1250 feet before you pass over the exposed divide, which is not a good spot to be during a lightning storm!
Holy crap. The hike to Crater Lake does not require a big expenditure of energy for its scenic rewards. Photographers will snap plenty of pictures of North Twilight Peak reflected in the lake’s still waters. Enjoyed the running water on the South Boulder Creek Trail. Or, for those who want some quad and lung-busting elevation, continue on to North Twilight.
This was #31 for me, and my least favorite 14er yet. These are federal lands and they are clearly strapped for funds. Turn left and drive a little over 0.5 mile on the narrow paved road to the parking area at Andrews Lake. South San Juan Wilderness, CO. 1/11. When you arrive at Crater Lake, the water fall is at 1 o’clock.
Almost everyone was wearing masks.
The colors were awesome.
Definitely willing to pay up. The first 2 miles of this trail climbs very gradually and only contains about 1/2 mile of steady steeper climbing at the end to reach the two lakes.
Note: The climb to North Twilight Peak is recommended for experienced parties only.
Bring a light snack for energy, lots of water.
The two trails that lead to upper lake didn’t seem to connect at the top. The crater lake trail begins at Maroon Lake and quickly breaks off from the scenic trail at .3 miles. From Boulder, head west on Canyon Blvd which is Hwy 119 to the town of Nederland. I’m kind of out of shape so it was pretty. As the trail swings east views open to North Twilight Peak (13,075) to the south. Note that it was below 40 degrees at 9am when I started - jacket advised this time of year! The trek to the upper crater lake wasn’t something that we had looked up before hand but cloud not resist. Main tips - go early, go on a weekday, and get ready to climb. Wear adequate shoes for rocks. Check with the welcome center in the Highlands for a stand by ticket to the Bells if you have no reservations or drive in before 8am. Parking lot pretty full when I arrived at 10. It's challenging in spots, very very rocky and decent elevation gain. It’s worth the extra hike past Crater Lake (dry) to scramble over more rock fields and see more peaks. The tarn possesses a unique teal hue and is home to some good-sized native cutthroat, which can be easily seen feeding in the shallow, log-choked outlet.
Both routes will take you to the lake, but the right fork is more established and avoids a steep down-climb at the lake and passes through amazing wildflowers. Everyone should do this.
not as pretty as Maroon Bells view at the base. It’s a really easy hike but honestly underwhelming at the top. Keep right and continue 9-1/2 miles to the Maroon Lake parking area. The hike to Crater Lake starts at pretty Andrews Lake, a popular fishing spot just south of Molas Pass (see driving directions). Trailhead Directions (29.3 miles northeast of Pagosa Springs).
The trailhead is located on the southwest end of the parking area. On top, you’ll come to a large pond which you’ll skirt. If someone wants to cancel, please email me @ email@example.com. Not much of a trail and rugged terrain.

Ended up being 2.2 miles RT with a boulder field (we love a good scramble so that was fun!) Be sure to follow the signs to crater lake, which will be heading higher into the valley.
Not a long length but lots of elevation gain so beware kids may have a hard time. At 5.1 miles the trail drops into a small depression, skirts a marshy area to your left (east), and then climbs over a hill to the basin holding Crater Lake (11,640-ft.) at 5.5 miles.
The trail and lakes are great. Very heavily trafficked. North Twilight Peak, rising to the southwest, forms the perfect backdrop for this pretty lake ringed by a forest. After the downed trees, you’ll descend into a small valley and then ascend the other side. Clay and I had not been hiking regularly, instead, we were having a way to much fun at weddings, Telluride Bluegrass and Widespread Panic. We loved the hike! Bring your fishing gear in the summer.
Openings offer great views of Engineer Mountain (12,968-ft.), Jura Knob and Twin Sisters to the west.
A second climb gains 370-ft. reaching the top of a hill at 2.4 miles.
Pamela - Denver - Date Posted: August 23, 2015 "My boyfriend and I hiked Crater Lakes during our stay in Colorado. Difficult climb back to the trailhead - start early! Walk towards camp site 6 and you will hear the water. Very dog friendly.
Hiked October 5th 2020. A lot of uphill and it does get rocky but my pit bull terrier was able to complete the entire thing just fine.
Thanks in Advance. It’s a great place to stop for a snack and rest your feet.
If you want a photo of the two lower lakes, you can take the left trail that leads to the upper lake. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!
Distance from Trailhead: 11.0 miles (round trip). The highlight was the water fall off the beaten track.
Crater Lake to the Saddle. Great views of the lower lakes from the top.
Walk towards camp site 6 and you will hear the water. Crater Lake Trail is a 6.1 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Aspen, Colorado that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The last mile to the lower lakes kicked my butt, as well as the hike up to the upper lake but it was all worth it. The highlight was the water fall off the beaten track.
Weminuche Wilderness Area, San Juan National Forest, near Silverton in Southwest Colorado. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/crater-lake-trail-2 Lil rocky at the end but did it in gym shoes.
Lots of challenging sections and magnificent views. Get spooky in Aspen with this ghost tour! The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, fishing, and backpacking and is best used from June until October. The bench has great camping options, but on the weekends, additional camping is available near the main inlet across the lake.
But there are huge boulders at the very top that gave me pause.
This trail fades in a couple places since it is not well defined yet, but push on and you will find it again.
Definitely worth it! The two lakes are extremely picturesque with easily traversable flat terrain around them.
Only other weird thing is that someone came up to our group and told us we were being too loud, at exactly 9pm? The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from June until October.
The crater lake trail begins at Maroon Lake and quickly breaks off from the scenic trail at .3 miles.
Please choose a different date. Great trail conditions. The logs in the outlet are stable enough to cross to the other side of the lake. Trail was extremely well maintained, I don’t know why a couple people have said they couldn’t figure out what direction to go. The trail to Crater Lake is just under 5.5 miles, but higher elevation routes sometimes feel longer.
