Food features a lot in Emma’s writing. And so the Mogford Prize for Food & Drink Writing was born, and we have just finished our seventh competition. It has been fascinating to read such diverse works of fiction, all of which reveal something about the complex roles that food and drink play in our lives. But there is more: a cheque to the winner of £7,500 and the winning short story will be published in a slim volume, copies of which are placed in the bedrooms of both The Old Parsonage and the Old Bank where they are enjoyed, and often taken away, by overnight guests.

They can be published or unpublished authors, but the entry itself must be previously unpublished.

Every year we invite two judges to join Jeremy in choosing the winner of the £10,000 award: One will be a writer and the other a journalist involved in the food and drink industry. It is about celebrating and using food as the inspiration for a story which can also include other elements, such as crime for example.’ Food and drink are components but they can be used like a twist of lime in a gin and tonic, to add flavour and fragrance but not necessarily to dominate. More than 400 entries were received from 15 countries for the 2013 award. When we met in the beautiful new library upstairs in the Old Parsonage I was struck by the comfortable combination of books, art, conversation and excellent coffee. Emma, a businesswoman who has had several short stories published in anthologies, said the story had been buzzing around her head for some time and she knew the Jeremy Mogford award would be the perfect medium for it.

I do not often have the opportunity to speak to someone who wants to make a serious difference to writers’ lives. Entries for the 2021 Mogford Prize will open midday on Wednesday 4th November ’20, closing 10 weeks later on Wednesday 13th January ’21. All entries submitted remain the property of the entrant.

The short-listed authors will be invited to the annual Quod party at the Old Bank Hotel on Thursday 7th April 2016 during the FT Weekend Oxford Literary Festival. Entries are now being sought for the 2014 Jeremy Mogford Prize for Food and Drink Writing, the annual short story competition run by the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival in association with Oxford Gastronomica, part of the Oxford School of Hospitality Management at Oxford Brookes University. The examples go on and on so that it becomes almost impossible to recall a work of literature that does not contain a salient reference to food and drink. He and his partner, John Mayhew, went on to acquire Rules in London, which Mayhew now runs solo. During the early years of Browns he would regularly visit La Coupole, a vast brasserie dating from the 1920s, on the boulevard du Montparnasse in Paris. He says: ‘I want to encourage and attract the very best writers to take part in the prize.
